Residential Perimeter Field Installation Manual

intermediate4–6 hours (5-device install)

Complete field installation guide for a 5-device residential perimeter, four foundation corners plus center-north mid-wall, connected by a continuous ½″ PVC water loop in an 18″ trench.

Safety: This system uses 12VAC landscape power and controls water solenoid valves around your foundation perimeter. Always install the transformer on a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet. Each solenoid valve has a blue manual override tab, rotate it to manually close the valve in an emergency. Commission and verify all devices before opening the main water shutoff.


System Overview

A Drip Defender perimeter install has three layers:

  • Water layer, ½″ Schedule-40 PVC runs in an 18″ trench around the foundation perimeter, looping from the manual shutoff valve at the garage through each valve box
  • Power layer, 12VAC transformer mounted on the garage exterior wall; 14AWG direct-burial landscape wire runs in the same trench to each device
  • Data layer, each device connects directly to the local WiFi access point at the installation site (no Hub or LoRa mesh required); soil data and control commands flow via MQTT to the TI cloud

Device Layout

For a standard residential property, five devices provide complete perimeter coverage:

The supply entry is at the SW corner, this is where the manual water shutoff and 12VAC transformer are located on the garage exterior wall.


Signal Flow

For each device:

Soil sensor → RS485 → ESP32-S3 → WiFi → TI Cloud Manager TI Cloud Manager → MQTT → Drip Defender → solenoid → emitter

Step 1 - Gather Components & Verify Kit

Before you dig, confirm you have everything.

Kit contents (per device)

  • Drip Defender unit, olive green enclosure, OLED display, MODE button, WiFi antenna
  • Latching solenoid valve, ¾″ NPT male ports, blue manual override tab
  • Soil sensor, 3000-WS, 3-tine stainless probes, RS485 output, ~10 ft cable
  • ½″ Schedule-40 PVC pipe, fittings, primer and cement
  • 14AWG 2-conductor direct-burial landscape wire
  • Drill, 1¼″ hole saw, shovel, level, pipe wrench, wire stripper

Procedure

  1. Unbox and lay out all components on a clean surface.
  2. Inspect the Drip Defender OLED display, it should show the Telemetry Insights LLC splash screen on power-up.
  3. Verify the soil sensor cable is intact with no nicks or cuts.
  4. Check the solenoid valve moves freely and the blue manual override tab turns smoothly.
  5. Confirm you have the 12VAC landscape transformer and enough 14AWG wire to reach from the garage to the farthest valve box.

Step 2 - Dig the Trench

18″ deep perimeter trench around the foundation.

Warning: Call 811 (USA) before digging, locate all underground utilities first.

Warning: Keep trench minimum 6 inches away from the foundation to avoid disturbing existing waterproofing.

Procedure

  1. Mark the trench path around the full foundation perimeter using marking paint or flags, staying 6–8 inches from the foundation wall.
  2. Dig a trench 18 inches deep and 6 inches wide around the perimeter. Pile excavated soil onto a tarp to keep the work area clean.
  3. At each of the 4 corners and the center of the north wall, excavate a wider pocket (12″ × 12″) to accommodate the valve box.
  4. At the garage exterior wall, dig from the valve box pocket to the water shutoff connection point and the 12VAC transformer mounting location.
  5. Smooth the trench bottom so the PVC will lie flat without stress points. Remove any sharp rocks.

Step 3 - Install PVC Water Main

½″ Schedule-40 PVC from manual shutoff through each valve box.

Warning: Use Teflon tape + pipe dope on ALL NPT threaded connections, solenoid valve ports are ¾″ NPT.

Warning: Allow PVC cement to cure 30 minutes before applying any water pressure.

Reference notes

  • Solenoid valve: ¾″ NPT male inlet and outlet, use ¾″ female adapters to connect to ½″ PVC runs
  • Reducing bushings: use ¾″ FPT × ½″ MPT if needed at valve connections

Procedure

  1. At the garage entry point, install the manual ball shutoff valve on the main supply line. This is your emergency override.
  2. Run ½″ PVC from the shutoff along the trench bottom toward the SW corner valve box pocket.
  3. At each valve box location, cut the PVC and install the latching solenoid valve inline. The arrow on the valve body must point in the direction of water flow.
  4. Continue PVC from the outlet side of each solenoid valve to the next box, then to the drip emitter stub-out.
  5. At the final emitter location, install a ½″ end cap or drip emitter fitting.
  6. Pressure test the full PVC run at 40 PSI for 10 minutes before backfilling, check every joint for seeps.

Step 4 - Run 14AWG Landscape Wire

12VAC power in the same trench as PVC.

Warning: Keep 14AWG wire at least 2 inches from the PVC pipe, use cable staples or offset the runs.

Warning: Use rated direct-burial 14AWG landscape wire only, not indoor wire.

Warning: Connect the transformer last, after all device wiring is complete.

Terminal block wiring (device rear panel)

  • Left terminal block: solenoid valve wire pair + 12VAC power pair
  • Right terminal block: Yellow = RS485 A, Blue = RS485 B, Black = GND (soil sensor)

Procedure

  1. Starting at the 12VAC transformer on the garage exterior wall, run 14AWG 2-conductor direct-burial wire through the trench alongside the PVC.
  2. At each valve box location, leave a 24-inch service loop of wire, this gives slack for device wiring without strain.
  3. Continue the wire daisy-chain from box to box around the full perimeter.
  4. At each box, strip ½ inch of insulation from each conductor. Connect to the LEFT terminal block on the back of the Drip Defender.
  5. Connect solenoid valve leads to the remaining left-side terminals (polarity does not matter for AC latching coil).
  6. Leave the transformer end of the wire disconnected until ALL device wiring is complete.

Step 5 - Install Soil Moisture Sensors

3-tine RS485 sensors placed 4–6 ft from foundation.

Warning: Do NOT install sensor within 12 inches of a drip emitter, readings will be artificially high.

Warning: All three tines must be fully inserted, partial insertion causes erroneous readings of 0% or 9999.

Reference notes

  • 3000-WS sensor: measures soil moisture (%) and temperature (°C/°F) via RS485 Modbus RTU
  • Cable wiring: Brown = 12VDC out, Blue = RS485 B, Yellow = RS485 A, Black = GND
  • Sensor orientation: prongs pointing toward the foundation wall to measure the critical moisture gradient

Procedure

  1. Measure 4–6 feet outward from the foundation wall at each device location.
  2. Dig a small pilot hole or loosen the soil at the sensor location.
  3. Insert the sensor vertically so all three tines are fully buried flush with the sensor body.
  4. Route the sensor cable through the trench back to the valve box, leaving a service loop.
  5. Connect to the RIGHT terminal block on the back of the device: Black → Ground (Pin 4, top), Yellow → RS485 A (Pin 3), Blue → RS485 B (Pin 2), Brown → 12VDC out (Pin 1, bottom).
  6. Note the sensor address (default: 0x01), configure in TI Cloud Manager during provisioning.

Step 6 - Mount Device in Valve Box

Secure Drip Defender unit inside the irrigation valve box.

Warning: Antenna must point upward and clear the valve box lid, do not bend or pinch the antenna cable.

Warning: Valve box lid must close fully, verify clearance before backfilling.

Reference notes

  • OLED displays: IP address, WiFi SSID, signal strength (dBm), altitude, UTC timestamp
  • LED indicator: red LED = heartbeat/active. MODE button cycles OLED display screens.

Procedure

  1. Place the green plastic irrigation valve box into the pre-dug pocket with the lid flush with or slightly above grade.
  2. Using the mounting tabs on the Drip Defender dock, secure the device back-plate inside the valve box.
  3. Route the solenoid valve wires and soil sensor cable through the appropriate knockout holes in the valve box sides.
  4. Snap the Drip Defender unit into the dock, it should seat firmly with the OLED display facing up.
  5. Verify the antenna points upward and clears the lid when closed.
  6. Close the lid and verify it latches, the valve box is the weatherproof enclosure for the device.

Step 7 - Power On & Commission

Connect transformer, verify OLED, provision in TI Cloud Manager.

Warning: Verify 12VAC transformer is plugged into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet.

Warning: Do not apply water pressure until all devices are online and reporting, confirm valve state in TI Cloud Manager first.

Reference notes

  • WiFi provisioning: device connects to saved WiFi on first boot. Use the mobile app to provision credentials on fresh units.
  • Signal guide: −30 to −50 dBm = strong. −50 to −70 dBm = acceptable. Below −70 dBm = poor.

Procedure

  1. Connect the 12VAC transformer leads to the landscape wire run. Plug the transformer into the GFCI outlet.
  2. Within 30 seconds, the Drip Defender OLED should illuminate and display the Telemetry Insights LLC splash screen.
  3. After boot, the OLED shows: online status, UTC timestamp, IP address, WiFi signal strength (dBm), SSID, and temperature.
  4. Log into the Telemetry Insights mobile app or TI Cloud Manager dashboard and verify the device appears as Online.
  5. Trigger a manual valve open command from the dashboard, verify water flows at the emitter, then close.
  6. Confirm soil moisture readings are updating in TI Cloud Manager every 60 seconds.
  7. Repeat for all 5 devices, then slowly open the main manual shutoff valve to full open.

Step 8 - Troubleshooting Reference

Use a multimeter set to VAC, probe the LEFT terminal block, expect 11–13V AC. Most field issues are wiring, not device failure.

Soil sensor reading 0 or 9999Check RS485 A/B wires are not swapped. Verify all tines are fully inserted in moist soil.
Valve not actuatingUse the blue manual override tab to confirm mechanical function. Check solenoid wire terminals are tight.
Erratic moisture readingsEnsure sensor is not within 12 inches of a drip emitter or hard surface.

Hold MODE for 10 seconds to enter diagnostics mode, OLED will display raw sensor ADC values and RS485 bus status.


Scaling

For larger properties or L-shaped/U-shaped footprints:

  • Add devices at additional mid-wall positions beyond the four corners
  • Each device is independently provisioned and monitored via WiFi
  • The PVC loop and wire trunk can be extended to additional tee points
  • No changes to existing devices are required when adding new ones
